Caltrans (CA Department of Transportation) has lots of plans to "tackle congestion" in our region, centered on one major project: adding a carpool/toll lane to U.S. 101 from San Bruno to San Francisco. This is the latest in a long series of projects to add managed lanes up the length of California.
Though they claim to be considering non-harmful ways of creating these managed lanes, officials have given clear signs that they strongly favor the worst possible approach: building an entirely new lane in each direction.
Caltrans is backsliding on their promises of sustainability. If we want to see real change, we must stand together and hold them to their word.
"Research clearly shows that widening does not improve traffic. We must do our part to protect our communities from unnecessary and harmful pollution."
- James Coleman, Councilmember and 2024 Mayor, City of South San Francisco
